The Question That Changed Everything for me

"People aren't broken. They're patterned."

Hey friends 🤍

Have you ever stopped and wondered why you react the way you do?

Why certain things bother you while other people seem completely unaffected?

Why you keep finding yourself in similar relationships, similar conflicts, similar frustrations, or similar emotional experiences?

Why some habits feel almost automatic?

Why some fears feel bigger than they should?

Why certain situations can make you feel ten years old again?

For most of my life, I assumed my reactions were simply who I was.

  • My personality.
  • My preferences.
  • My strengths.
  • My weaknesses.

Then, a little over ten years ago, shortly after my 28 year toxic marriage ended, I heard something that changed the direction of my life.

I was listening to Bruce Lipton speak. What caught my attention wasn't the science. It wasn't biology. It wasn't epigenetics. It was his honesty. He was talking about his own life.

His relationships. His parenting. His health. His happiness.

And he openly admitted that despite his success, he wasn't happy.

That got my attention.

Because here's a successful, intelligent, accomplished man asking himself a difficult question:

Why am I creating experiences I don't actually want?

Then he shared an idea that stopped me in my tracks.

He came to realize that much of what was shaping his life experience was happening below conscious awareness.

In the subconscious mind.

And I remember thinking:

  • What if that's true?
  • What if many of the things I believed were simply "me" were actually patterns?
  • What if some of my reactions were learned?
  • What if some of my fears were learned?
  • What if some of my relationship struggles were learned?
  • What if some of the limitations I believed about myself weren't facts at all?
  • What if they were programs?

Honestly, I don't think I've stopped asking those questions since.

Because the deeper I've gone into understanding human behavior, the more I've realized something: Most people aren't broken. They're patterned.

We learn how to relate. We learn how to protect ourselves. We learn what feels safe.

We learn what feels dangerous. We learn how to gain approval. We learn how to avoid pain.

And much of that learning happens long before we're consciously evaluating it.

The good news is that patterns are not permanent. Awareness changes things.

Once we can see a pattern, we have the opportunity to choose differently.

Not perfectly. Not overnight. But intentionally.

And that may be one of the most hopeful truths I've ever discovered.

The question that changed my life wasn't:

"What's wrong with me?"

It was:

"What is running my life?"

And that question continues to lead me toward deeper awareness, greater compassion, and more freedom every year.

Stay tuned for this week's podcast episode where I'll share more about the moment that started that journey and how it eventually became the foundation of the work I do today.

With love,

the layers of an onion

07-02-2026 "Layers. Onions have layers, Ogres have layers." — Shrek Hey friends 🤍 This week marks Newsletter #100 🎊 I actually sat staring at a blank screen for a while wondering what to write about. One hundred newsletters feels significant. Not because of the number itself, but because of everything that's happened while writing them. Then a thought hit me. The woman who wrote Newsletter #1 isn't here anymore. I don't mean that in some dramatic way. I'm still me. I still love personal...

07-02-2026 "The things that are meant for you bring peace. The things you've outgrown create pressure." Hey friends 🤍 Have you noticed that everything feels a little more intense lately? Not just for you, but for everyone. People are struggling with anxiety. Relationships are being questioned. Careers are being reevaluated. Health issues are demanding attention. Financial pressures are forcing difficult conversations. Even people who are usually calm, grounded, and steady seem to be feeling...

busy lady on phone next to man

07-02-2026 “Some people wear busy the way others wear armor.” Hey friends 🤍 Have you ever noticed how often people answer the question, “How have you been?” with: “Busy.” or, “Just staying busy.”? And what’s interesting is that culturally, we tend to hear that as a positive thing. “You’ve been busy? That’s great.” “Business must be doing well.” “You’re productive.” “You’re successful.” “You’re important.” But, people are not actually busy because they are fulfilled. They are busy because...
