“It’s not what you intend that shapes your life. It’s what happens in the moments just before you’re pulled off course.”
Hey friends 🤍
I have discovered that breaking your own promises is not a discipline problem. It’s something deeper. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
This week has been revealing, but not in a big, dramatic way. It’s been quieter than that.
Subtle.
The kind of awareness that shows up in those small “wait… what just happened?” moments.
I started paying attention to something I think most of us miss.
The moment right before we go against ourselves.
You know the one.
You decide you’re going to take care of your body. You decide you’re going to go the the gym or for that run. You decide you’re not eating that thing today, or reacting to something a way you normally do.
And then something steps in.
Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just enough to shift you.
It might come as:
- A thought: “Just this once.”
- A feeling: “I don’t feel like it right now.”
- A quiet justification: “You deserve it.”
- Or no words at all… just autopilot
And suddenly you are doing the exact thing you said you weren’t going to do.
Not later. Not tomorrow. Right then.
And you catch yourself thinking, “Wait… didn’t I just decide something different?”
That moment is what I’ve been watching this week.
So I started playing a game with myself.
I decide what I’m doing… and then I get curious:
What is going to try to stop me?
- Is it my ego trying to keep things familiar?
- Is it my inner child seeking comfort?
- Is it my body choosing what it already knows?
- Is it an old belief that says this version of me is safer?
Instead of being surprised when I don’t follow through, I’m listening for the interruption.
And when it shows up, I hear it.
“Oh… there you are.”
And then I choose again. Not perfectly. But consciously.
And this isn’t just happening with habits. We also do it in our relationships all the time.
Not as “I’m going to eat the chips”, but as something more subtle.
- A tone you didn’t mean to use.
- A reaction that came out faster than you expected.
- Words that didn’t land the way you thought they would.
And afterward, you’re left thinking,
“That’s not what I meant.”
And you’re telling the truth, but something else spoke.
Not your intention, but your pattern.
The part of you that’s practiced, conditioned, and automatic.
We don’t actually live from what we intend to do. We live from what is already wired.
From what our system knows how to do without thinking.
So whether it looks like:
- Reaching for something you said you wouldn’t
- Or reacting in a way you didn’t mean to
It’s not random.
It’s the same mechanism.
Just showing up in different areas of your life.
So when you don’t follow through on a promise to yourself, or when something comes out wrong in a relationship, it’s not random. It’s a pattern.
And this is why that micro-moment matters so much.
Because that is where change actually happens.
Not after the fact. Not when you reflect later.
Right there. In the interruption.
In the moment where the old pattern tries to take over.
This week, I’ve been practicing something simple:
- Not perfection
- Not control
- Just awareness
Catching the moment before I abandon myself.
Catching the moment before a pattern speaks for me.
And choosing… even when it feels uncomfortable.
Especially then.
Because the familiar path will always feel smoother. It’s well-practiced. It’s automatic.
But it’s also the path that keeps leading to the same place.
If you want to try something this week, keep it simple:
Pick one thing.
And instead of trying to force yourself to follow through, get curious.
What shows up right before you don’t?
- Listen for it
- Notice it
- Name it
And then choose anyway.
That’s how this work actually happens.
Not by becoming someone new overnight, but by becoming aware of what has been choosing for you all along.
If you’re starting to notice these patterns in your own life, in your habits, your reactions, your relationships…
This is exactly the work I do.
Not surface-level change. Not trying harder.
But understanding the patterns that are actually running… and learning how to shift them in real time.
